Today, there are so many different types of computer programming fields that a computer programming degrees can be achieved in as little as two years. However, a four year computer programming degree is becoming more desirable. Whether you are interested in a two year or four year computer programming degree, there are universities, community colleges, technical institutes and proprietary schools that can suit your needs.

If you do not have a computer programming degree, an employer may still higher you or a position within this field, though it is not very often and your hands-on training and experience will play a large role in whether or not you are hired. On the other hand, it is better to have a higher level computer programming degree and as well as relevant experience if possible, as this is a highly competitive field. Having a computer programming degree proves to the potential employer that you have made a serious commitment for his career.

As job requirements make it necessary to hire employees with a more advanced education and the jobs within the field become more demanding, it is predicted those wishing to enter the field within the next few years will need to have a four year bachelor's degree or higher. In 2004, over forty nine percent of those holding a computer programming degree consisted of a Bachelor’s degree, while only ten percent consisted of an Associate degree.

Because we live in a more technological world, computers are needed for a much higher number of jobs. Therefore, a computer programmer has a better chance of being hired with a degree, which also involves having an understanding of business skills, science, math and engineering. A degree in computer science is the most important degree to achieve. It is vital to a company to hire someone with the knowledge of how to work with various systems and be able to incorporate a working system to meet the needs of that particular company. They also must be taught how to teach non-technical employees a system that is somewhat user-friendly.
